BALTIMORE, MD. (Wednesday, January 19, 2022) — On January 19, 2022, at approximately 7:25 p.m., Eastern District patrol officers responded to the 2400 block of East Monument Street, for a Shot Spotter alert. Once there, officers located four adult males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Ambulances responded to the scene where one of the victims was pronounced dead. The other three victims were transported to an area hospital where two of the victims were later pronounced dead. One victim remains in the hospital. He is expected to survive. One of the victims pronounced dead was a Safe Streets East worker.

"Baltimore, enough is enough. What happened tonight was a horrific tragedy. We cannot and will not allow violence to continue to plague our city," said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. "Our Safe Streets workers put their lives on the line day in and day out because they believe in a better future for our city – a future we all should believe in. I ask that we keep the loved ones of those we lost tonight in our thoughts and pray that the person in critical condition pulls through. If you know anything that may help us make an arrest in this case, say something."

“We are heartbroken and angered by the news that another one of our own, a member of the Safe Streets family, was tragically taken from us during tonight’s quadruple shooting in East Baltimore. We lost a brother, a villager, who was doing his job and nothing more. We must do better,” said Shantay Jackson, Director of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, which helps oversee Safe Streets. “Please keep the family, our outreach workers, and site staff in your thoughts. In the wake of this devastating loss, the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement will focus on providing support to the family and our frontline staff, including grief counseling and familial supports. This is a reminder of the courageous, yet dangerous job our frontline staff does each day when working with those at the highest risk of being a shooter or the victim of a shooting.”

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said, "Tonight’s incident was a tragic event. Safe Street workers mediate the very types of conflicts we saw tonight. All the Safe Streets workers are to be applauded for their work in reducing gun violence and promoting a message of redemption and peace to the many young people of our city. We are dedicating every available resource to finding and apprehending the cowardly perpetrators of this act.”
